Life at work or life after work-what matters more? Ten years ago, answering that would have been easy. People moved to places where they found jobs, less concerned about the quality of life. Not anymore. Though jobs are still the prime movers, for an increasing number of middle-class Indians quality of life is becoming as important as quality of work.
And as life and work become more intertwined, businesses and people flock to states that cater most appealingly to both. That's why INDIA TODAY asked economists Bibek Debroy and Laveesh Bhandari to devise a ranking of Indian states that gives importance to both-business environment and quality of life. The result is India's first ever ranking of the best and worst states to live-and work-in.
Each states' performance was tracked between 1991 and 2001. The performance of the 1990s provides early indications of the winners and losers in a competitive environment. The rankings also reveal some tectonic shifts in India's economy, demography and living standards.
